Web Design Mistakes to Avoid

Have you made any of these web design mistakes?

We sure did when we were starting out with our first business. These are common web design mistakes and working with a web designer doesn’t just mean a pretty website, we work with you to create a website that works FOR you and will grow with you and your business.

WORDPRESS Only - Yes, this is controversial but trust me on this, or send me an email to talk about why this can be a web design mistake for most small business owners. Wordpress can be a useful platform and has it’s place in the online world, but it is not the be all and end all for small business, bloggers, and content creators… or for SEO. There are plenty of Wordpress myths out there and plenty of other platforms that provide businesses with what they need to grow & maintain their website with ease (and less security worries).

Using IPHONE SELFIES - Using iPhone Selfies and not investing in professional, beautiful, branded images. The QUAILTIY of the photography & Images on your websites MATTERS. Hiring a photographer can be an investment or it could be the nerves stopping you, but with every client I’ve worked with on web design we talk about the importance of the images and how they play a role in the design and the credibility of their website.

FORGETTING ABOUT THE CLIENT’’S Journey - Websites should be beautiful & creative, but to be well designed they also have to be functional and focus on the client’s journey. User experience is a vital part of your website keeping your goals, your mission, and your web visitors in mind. Your website should be a combination of representing and showcasing who your business is & attracting and focusing on your ideal client/customer.
.
What ABOUT SEO - If we’re talking web design, we’re going to talk about SEO. And just because you may have a SEO plug-in for your platform doesn’t mean you’ve hit SEO gold. I don’t know how many existing websites I’ve worked on that have a Yoast Plug-in for SEO but everything is orange and red, no image alt tags, or the SEO title/description are left blank, or they’re using image graphics instead of H1 & H2 headers. When you’re designing a website it’s important to create an SEO plan and lay a foundation for SEO basics and  goals.
.
Leaving OUT CTAs - 70% of Small Business Websites don’t have a Call to Action on their homepage 😳😳😳! CTAs on your website tell clients & website visitors what action they should take next on your website. It directs your audience & increases conversions.

FORGETTING about MOBILE - 55% of website views come from mobile. 57% of website users say that won’t recommend a website that has a poor layout/design. Is it still easy to navigate, do the CTAs stand out, does it fit within the parameters of the mobile device (no overflow text), are they text & images the proper size to read & see? How your website looks and functions on mobile matters.
